PUNE: In a shocking incident, a 21-year-old woman had acid flung on her face by a man who had been professing his love for her since long.

According to the Yerwada police, the woman, a resident of Katraj-Ambegaon, works at a call-centre at Kalyaninagar.

The accused, Kailash Adagale (25), of Thergaon, who has been arrested, works as a driver for the cab service of another call-centre at Hinjewadi, where the woman earlier worked. Adagale, a school dropout, used to ferry the woman in his cab till she changed jobs.

Adagale had often told the woman that he loved her, but she ignored him, the police said. Even after she quit her job at Hinjewadi, Adagale used to call her up on her cellphone and at times even go to see her.

On Monday evening, Adagale accosted her after she came out of her office. He asked her to sit in his cab, failing which he would create a ruckus and inflict injuries on himself.

After she sat in the car, Adagale asked her if she loved him. The woman bluntly told him not to contact her again. An enraged Adagale then flung battery acid on her face, damaging her face and an eye. Some acid also fell on his hands.

Passersby nabbed Adagale after the woman raised an alarm. The woman has been admitted to Jehangir hospital, while Adagale was treated at the Sassoon hospital.
